Job description: Position Title: Payroll AccountantDepartment: Finance/AccountingReports To: Finance Manager/Accounting ManagerLocation: Lagos, NigeriaJob Overview:The Payroll Accountant is responsible for overseeing the processing of payroll, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This position handles payroll data, tax filings, employee compensation, and related accounting functions. The Payroll Accountant works closely with HR, management, and finance departments to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing for all employees.Key Responsibilities:1. Payroll Processing:
- Process monthly payroll for all employees, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, bonuses, deductions, and overtime.
- Review and verify employee timesheets, attendance records, and other payroll- related data.
- Coordinate with HR and management to process new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, and leave.
2. Tax Compliance:
- Ensure payroll taxes (federal, state, and local) are calculated and deducted accurately.
- Prepare and submit timely tax filings, including monthly, quarterly and annually.
- Stay updated on tax regulations and ensure the company is compliant with all payroll-related tax laws.
3. Deductions and Benefits:
- Administer payroll deductions for benefits, and other employee deductions.
- Ensure proper application of benefits and deductions in compliance with company policies and government regulations.
4. Reconciliations:
- Perform payroll account reconciliations to ensure the accurate transfer of payroll data to the general ledger.
- Reconcile payroll-related accounts (e.g., payroll liabilities, tax withholdings, benefit accounts) on a monthly basis.
5. Reporting and Audits:
- Generate payroll reports and provide data to management, HR, and finance teams as required.
- Assist in the preparation of audits related to payroll and compensation processes.
- Respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees and management.
6. Employee Support:
- Address employee inquiries related to payroll, deductions, benefits, and other compensation issues.
- Provide support during annual open enrollment for benefits and ensure employees understand their compensation and benefits packages.
7. System Maintenance and Improvements:
- Maintain payroll system software and ensure it is updated to meet compliance requirements.
- Recommend and implement improvements to streamline payroll processes and enhance efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in payroll processing or accounting roles, preferably with knowledge of payroll laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with payroll software.
- SAP knowledge is a plus.
- Experience with tax reporting and filings (federal, state, and local) is highly desirable
Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial software.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
- Knowledge of applicable payroll laws and regulations.
