Job Description
- In the agronomist role, you will collaborate with farmers and crop researchers to conduct a detailed analysis of crop data.
- You will be expected to maintain a deep understanding of soil productivity principles and keep tabs on the latest trends and technologies in agronomy.
- Success in this role will be determined by providing valuable insights that lead to solutions that drive higher crop yields.
Duties and responsibilities
- Maximize crop production from a given acreage of soil.
- To maximize a deep understanding of soil productivity, principal and keep tabs on the latest trends and technologies on agronomy.
- To evaluate and improve seed quality and perform experiment to determine and then maximize plant nutrient and soil health.
- To initiate procurement processes of government approved farm supplies such as fertilizer, seed (non-GMO) weed chemicals and pesticides, and take effective management of such supplies when needed.
- To organise and supervise chemical weed and pest controls operation in the farm according to National policy on integrated pest management.
- To prepare activity and technical report on monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, and annually to the organisation.
- Identify an accurate set of targets in terms of crop yield in conjunction with the organisation,
- To understand the implication of the weather and making contingency plans such as planning for irrigation.
- Develop planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
- Evaluate and improve keeping detailed records regarding fields and crop samples.
- Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing and selection
- Managing teams of scientist while conducting field visit
- To perform quality control for seed calibre and soil standards and assesses crop production of the farm.
- To develop an effective and efficient farming practices, conduct research take and text samples and solve complex agricultural problems.
- To Develop a better planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improving crop yields of the farm.
- To generate reports and presenting findings to Management, clients or other interested parties.
- To conduct detailed analysis of crop data presentation
- Research on planning programming and executing measures for maximum for utilisation of lands, labour, capital, sunshine, rainwater, temperature, humidity, Transport and marketing facilities.
- Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing and selection.
- Conduct any other activities as may be assigned by the supervisor.
- Conduct yearly estimation of crop yield.
Qualifications
- Minimum of four (4) years post-NYSC experience in a similar role.
- Minimum of a Degree in Agronomy / Agriculture, or a related field
- Experience working in a Palm plantation is an added advantage.
Skills and Competencies:
- Basic Reporting Skills.
- Computer Literacy Skills i.e., Excel, MS Office and High level of integrity and honesty.
- Good Communications and interpersonal skill.
- Team Player and good at time Management and Organizational Skill.
- Initiative, Drive, and ability to work with Minimal supervision.
- Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel and stoop for extended periods.
