Job Description
Our client operates in the Leasing and Transport sector and requires an experienced Financial Controller to handle all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecast preparation, as well as the development and enforcement of internal control policies and procedures. Including financial risk management.
Job Accountabilities/ Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the MD/CEO the Financial Controller will be responsible for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all treasury and financial-related activities as well as overseeing the finance functions of the company and its subsidiaries. This will include direct responsibility for accounting, finance, forecasting, strategic planning, cash management, working capital management, job costing, legal, property management, deal analysis and negotiations, investor relationships and partnership compliance, and private and institutional financing.
Operational Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in the development of the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the Finance & Accounting functions of the organization
- Responsible for preparing the stand-alone and consolidated accounts of the company, managing the Audit process, and ensuring that the audited accounts are ready before statutory filing dates.
- Preparing the monthly management account of the company and ensuring the accounts are analysed and presented during the monthly performance review sessions.
- Establish standardized procedures for planning, budget preparation, and monitoring adherence to the approved budget as well as the alignment of the budget to the objectives of the company and that sufficient funds are available to fulfill these objectives.
- Improve the quality of financial and regulatory reporting and monitoring the process, ensuring the effectiveness of risk management, providing oversight of treasury function, and adopting a proactive approach to tax planning as well as management of tax-related issues.
- Oversee every aspect of the yearly budgeting process up to Board approval and prudently manage the company’s resources within the approved budget.
- Manage the company’s Assets and Liabilities and prepare the consolidated Asset and Liabilities management reports.
- Monitor and control capital expenditure ensuring compliance with the policies and adherence to budget/forecast.
- Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
- Ensure effective allocation of capital to investments and projects that will yield the maximum return on investment and maximize shareholder value.
- Ensure that the capital required for all entities to function is met in accordance with the approved strategies by their respective Boards.
- Determine the optimal approach and source to raise capital (debt/equity) and engage/negotiate with consultants to manage the capital-raising process. Analyse investment opportunities against investment criteria and evaluate key drivers and commercial assumptions.
- Deciding on investment strategies by considering cash and liquidity risks
- Review the risk management framework and ensure that the risk appetite is reviewed at least once a year or more frequently as may be required in the event of significant/material changes in the strategy or in line with regulatory requirements/demands.
- Review the adequacy of key corporate arrangements such as risk strategy, risk register, antifraud and corruption strategy, and corporate plan.
- Monitor the risk-taking activities and risk exposures to ensure they are in line with the Board approved risk appetite, risk limits, and corresponding capital or liquidity needs (i.e capital planning)
- Develop a comprehensive framework for managing the company’s tax obligations
- Ensure the Company is tax efficient and assess the tax impact of various activities, such as the acquisition or disposal of fixed assets or a deliberate change in the employee population
- Estimate the organization’s periodic tax liabilities and ensure appropriate taxing authorities receive tax return filings and payments when due
- Plan and ensure that the statutory and regulatory audits of the company are concluded as at when due; liaise with external auditors on all audit matters.
- Represent the organization’s progress on strategic goals to stakeholders by providing clear communication of performance and a perspective relative to the competitors, taking a forward-looking view in the management of key risks, and responding positively to issues raised by industry regulators.
- Stay abreast with regulatory and industry developments as may be relevant to the organization
- Ensure there are adequate controls across the organization to prevent any losses of any kind – financial or otherwise.
Requirements
The Financial Controller will have at least 10 years of experience and will be a highly astute, Senior Finance generalist who has had a broad range of experience in Financial Functions. He/ she will be a confident self-starter, agile, and able to simultaneously support the entire enterprise across the different entities. He/she will have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and will be able to engage with a range of stakeholders. The Financial Controller will understand the leasing, transport, and logistics sector and successfully manage and engage various personalities in the sector. Academic Qualifications and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field (MBA preferred).
- ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or other relevant qualification is mandatory

Method of Application
Responsible for the daily management of accounting functions. Oversees and directs general accountingoperations, compliance reporting, and financial reporting. Prepares and reviews accounting reports. Acts as the custodian of all financial transactions and ensures proper reconciliation of the company’s transactions
Carries out banking transactions on behalf of the company;
- Reconciliation of bank statement;
- Posting of all transactions on ERP
- Monthly detailed update of rent schedule adjusting for prepayment and provisions and postingaccordingly.
- Detailed analysis and posting of company revenues from all service points.
- Detailed analysis of company branch expenses to ensure that they are correctly posted onamonthly basis.
- Vendor management (Accruals and provisions) and proper reconciliation of vendor accounts.
- Maintaining accounting records and information.
- Analyzing and reconciliation of Inventory using ERP
- Detailed analysis and Preparing of Monthly Amortization Report (NSITF, HMO, ITF)
- Liaises with auditors to provide all accounting and financial information to complete the audit exercise;
- Ensures yearly company income tax and other taxes due are remitted.
- Confirm revenue inflow into company’s bank account
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting from a reputable and accreditedinstitution A member of a recognised accounting professional body such as ICAN or ACCA is an added advantage.
Work Experience:
- 3- 5 years’ work experience as an accountant Technical Knowledge Area: Knowledge of general accounting principles Knowledge of Accounting Software such as SAGE, QuickBooks etc
