Design Lab Assistant
- The Design Lab Assistant position will play a key role in supporting the operations of our Design lab and helping students bring their design projects to life. This position offers a unique opportunity to work alongside passionate educators and students who are dedicated to creating a just and sustainable world.
Key Responsibilities
- Lab Maintenance: Assist in maintaining a clean and organized work environment within the design lab. This includes recycling materials, minimizing waste, and implementing sustainable practices to ensure a safe working space.
- Project Support: Provide support to students working on design projects. This may involve assisting with research, gathering materials, and providing guidance on design concepts. Additionally, assisting with the 3D printing, laser cutting, and heavy-duty hardware (band saw, table saw, etc.) to ensure student safety.
- Equipment Management: Help manage and maintain design equipment and tools, ensuring they are used responsibly and safely. This includes scheduling maintenance and troubleshooting technical issues in collaboration with the Design Teachers.
- Administrative Tasks: Assist with administrative duties such as scheduling lab sessions, coordinating with teachers, and managing inventory of design materials and tools.
- Collaboration: Foster a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere within the design lab. Work closely with students and educators to share ideas, provide feedback, and promote teamwork.
- Learning: Stay up-to-date on new design tools, technologies and practices
Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a creative or product lab/workshop environment (or a proven desire to learn).
- Excellent organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Safety certification or willingness to obtain certification in lab safety protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of current design software and tools (e.g. laser cutter, Fusion 360, SketchUp, etc.)
- A willingness to learn new design software and tools.
- A passion for design and a creative mindset is a plus.
