Community Engagement and Hygiene Promotion Facilitator
Role objectives
In particular, s / he will:
- Facilitate community engagement throughout the WASH project implementation period at field level.
- Engage different community members, including women, girls, boys & men before, during & after WASH activities undertaking.
- Manage, supervise & coordinate community volunteers, e.g. WASHCOMs & WASH maintenance teams in our clients WASH unit operating camps or camp like settings or host communities.
- Responsible for coordinating hygiene promotion activities, collecting & analyzing data coming from community volunteers.
- Serves as links between these committees, LGA counterparts (like NEMA / SEMA, water board) & community volunteers.
- Support and mentor WASH committees, WASH & site maintenance team in planning & carrying out hygiene promotion on improving IDPs & communities’ risky WASH related behaviors, ensure appropriate use & maintenance of WASH facilities.
- Support & mentor WASH committees & WASH maintenance team in planning & carrying out cholera preparedness & response initiatives in the camps & cholera hotspots.
- Hold regular meetings with WASH committees & WASH maintenance team to discuss identified key risk practices & support the team of WASH committees to plan & carry out appropriate community mobilization activities to promote safe practices.
- Support our client in the gathering of baseline data, profile of beneficiaries & WASH needs of the affected community.
- Information collected must be reliable / trustworthy & accurate.
- Synergize & act as link between our clients WASH, shelter, DTM, PSS & the affected population at camp / community level.
- Assess the needs & resources of IDPs in terms of basic WASH needs with participation.
- Notify challenges & changes during project implementation ahead of time.
- Submit daily, weekly & monthly reports on time using standard format.
- Any other task not listed above when requested by the supervisors.
- Lead the implementation of the following activities:
- House to house visits, community meetings & conduct focus group discussions / sessions on hygiene promotion & cholera preparedness & response.
- Behavior changes campaigns in the communities, camps, health facilities & schools.
- Conduct regular community wide environmental cleaning campaign & promoting safe waste disposal mechanism to eliminate risks of vectors & maintaining the hygienic conditions of water points by eliminating contamination sources.
- Discussion & activities on safe water storage & treatment.
- Hand washing campaign.
- Menstrual hygiene management promotion.
- Use of hygiene promotion information, educational materials.
- Latrines monitoring & mobilize users on cleaning & maintenance.
Project reporting
- This role works under the overall supervision of the WASH Program Manager & the direct supervision of the WASH Senior Program Assistant.
Key competencies
- Diploma in public health, environmental health or similar fields iwht a minimum of two years for university diploma or a year for degree.
- Experience in humanitarian field, NGO, INGO is mandatory.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain integrity in performing responsibility assigned.
- Must be proactive individual & an independent worker with great team player who is also a fast learner.
- Strong IT literacy & interpersonal skills are required for this role.
- Strong communication & negotiation skills, administrative & time management skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications.
- Must have strong analytical, planning & people management skills, ability to prepare clear & concise report.
- Trusted by the community, with certain maturity in making decisions, widely accepted, respected.
- Possess good leadership skills & ability to explain instructions clearly to WASH committees & site maintenance team.
- Ability to motivate & manage teams of WaSH committees & site maintenance team in collaboration with WASH staff.
- Not biased towards men, accept the role of women in decision making on key issues & respect gender sensitivities in the community.
- Have some prior knowledge of health, hygiene & community mobilisation.
- Willing & open to learn about hygiene promotion & community mobilisation work.
- Have enthusiasm characterised by being motivated to support our client & communities in voluntary commitment.
- Fluency in English is required (oral & written) & working knowledge of any local languages is desirable.
