Job Summary
- Our client in the shipping and marine industry is seeking a highly experienced Designated Person Ashore (DPA) to join their team in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The ideal candidate will possess technical expertise, sound knowledge of shipping practices, and a strong commitment to safety.
- As a DPA, you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and compliant operation of vessels under our management, including maintenance planning, procurement, and regulatory compliance.
- If you have 7-10 years of experience in the shipping or marine services industry, along with a technical degree in engineering or sciences, we invite you to apply for this contract position in our operations department.
Key Responsibilities
- Documenting all planned maintenance systems for the vessel.
- Recording and filing all routine maintenance services and repairs carried out on the vessel.
- Preparing the vessel for external and internal audit schedules such as OVIP, OVHSA, etc.
- Documenting and filing all drills and HSE meetings on board the vessel.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations for the vessel.
- Following up on all planned maintenance systems.
- Implementing a Safety Management System (SMS) and ensuring its adherence.
- Ensuring compliance with legal regulations and company policies.
- Reporting to management on activities and issues.
- Organising and monitoring internal audits, including verifying the independence and training of internal auditors.
- Reviewing all reports of non-conformities, hazardous situations, or accidents received from the various vessels operating the SMS.
- Reviewing compliance of all crews and vendors.
- Monitoring maintenance and repairs onboard vessels.
Mandatory Quality:
- Technical soundness with the ability to understand shipping language and wide-ranging reading capabilities.
- Safety-conscious mindset with extensive knowledge of crew management and marine vessel operations.
Skills and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Engineering, or a related field.
- 7-10 years of experience in ship management or related roles.
- In-depth knowledge of marine regulations and standards.
- Familiarity with safety management systems (SMS) implementation.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Leadership skills with the ability to motivate and supervise teams.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
Qualifications:
- Technical degree in Engineering/Sciences.
- Certification as a Designated Person Ashore (DPA) is preferred.
- Valid seafarer’s medical certificate and seaman’s book (where applicable).
- Familiarity with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and other relevant maritime regulations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
